Text and images

Text boxes hold the written part of your pattern — materials, gauge, abbreviations, and the instructions themselves — and images let you add photos of the finished piece or close-ups of a technique.

  1. Select Add text box on the left rail. A new, empty text box appears near the top-left of the page, showing Type your pattern text….
  2. Click the box and type your text. To come back and edit a text box later, double-click it.
  3. Press Esc (or click outside the box) when you are done.

Text boxes do not grow as you type: if your text runs past the bottom of the box, drag the box’s corner handle to make it taller. Text that does not fit is cut off, on screen and in the PDF.

You can paste formatted text from another document with Cmd/Ctrl + V — headings, lists, links, and basic formatting come along with it.

The toolbar along the top of the editor formats the text box you are editing. It is grayed out until you double-click into a text box. From left to right:

  • Undo and Redo — for typing in the current text box.
  • Text style — Normal, Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, Bullet list, Numbered list, Quote, or Code block.
  • Font — Sans, Georgia, Times New Roman, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, or Courier.
  • Font size — the − and + buttons, or type a size from 8 to 72 and press Enter.
  • Bold, Italic, Underline, and Inline code.
  • More text formats — Strikethrough, Subscript, Superscript, and Clear formatting (which removes character formatting such as bold, font, size, and colors, but leaves headings, lists, and links alone).
  • Text color and Background color — choose from the swatches, or pick any color with Custom color. Background color highlights the selected text; it does not fill the whole box.
  • Bullet list and Numbered list.
  • Insert link — select some text first, then enter the web address. Leave the address empty to remove a link.
  • Alignment — Align left, Align center, Align right, or Justify, plus Outdent and Indent.
Double-click the text box. Select the first line and choose Text style → Heading 1, then a Text color. Select the rounds and choose Bullet list; Cmd/Ctrl + B makes the selected words bold.

The usual keyboard shortcuts work while you type: Cmd/Ctrl + B, I, and U for bold, italic, and underline. Right-click inside a text box you are editing for Cut, Copy, and Paste.

  1. Select Add image on the left rail.
  2. Choose an image file from your computer.

The image is placed on the page as its own box. Move it by dragging, and resize it with its corner handle — it keeps its proportions. To add a caption, put a text box underneath.

Large images are scaled down automatically when you add them (to 1600 pixels on the longest side), which keeps your pattern quick to load and sync. Images are saved on your device first and then uploaded to your account, so you can add them even while you are offline. On another device, a light gray placeholder shows until the image has finished downloading.
